The best mesh WiFi for streaming sports without buffering
If the game freezes in the fourth quarter, the problem is usually your WiFi, not your internet plan. Here's how to fix it.
Why live games buffer
A movie can preload minutes ahead; a live game can't. If the signal drops even for a moment, it freezes. The usual causes:
- The TV is far from the router, or there are several walls or floors in between.
- The TV is on the 2.4 GHz network, which is slower and more crowded.
- Lots of devices are online at the same time during the game.
Take our WiFi check to see whether the speed at your TV is enough.
Do you need a mesh system?
Probably, if the speed at the TV is much lower than at the router, you have multiple floors, or parts of the house have no signal. Try the free fixes first: put the TV on the 5 GHz network or, better, plug it in with an Ethernet cable.

How to set it up so games don't buffer
- Put the main unit somewhere central, not hidden inside a cabinet.
- Place each satellite halfway between the router and the dead zone, not inside the dead zone.
- Plug the TV into the nearest satellite with a cable: most have an Ethernet port. It's the best trick for buffer-free games.
- If you have Ethernet in the walls, use it to connect the units (wired backhaul).
- Prioritize the TV in the system's app (QoS or "priority device"), if it has that feature.
FAQ
How much speed do I need to stream a game in 4K?
About 25 Mbps per 4K TV and about 8 Mbps for HD, measured at the TV. Leave headroom for the other devices in the house.
Do I need WiFi 7?
Not for streaming games: WiFi 6 is plenty for 4K. WiFi 7 is future-proofing and helps in homes with many devices.
Mesh or a WiFi extender?
Mesh. An extender often halves your speed and creates a separate network; a mesh system keeps one fast network across the whole house.
Should I get a faster internet plan instead?
Only if your speed is low even next to the router. If it's good at the router and bad at the TV, the problem is WiFi, and mesh fixes it.
